The human voice (also referred to as a steven) consists of sound made by a human being using the vocal folds for talking, singing, laughing, crying, screaming, etc. Human voice is specifically that part of human sound production in which the vocal folds (vocal cords) are the primary sound source. Generally speaking, the mechanism for generating the human voice can be subdivided into three parts; the lungs, the vocal folds within the larynx, and the articulators. The lung (the pump) must produce adequate airflow and air pressure to vibrate vocal folds (this air pressure is the fuel of the voice). The vocal folds (vocal cords) are a vibrating valve that chops up the airflow from the lungs into audible pulses that form the laryngeal sound source. The muscles of the larynx adjust the length and tension of the vocal folds to ‘fine tune’ pitch and tone. The articulators (the parts of the vocal tract above the larynx consisting of tongue, palate, cheek, lips, etc.) articulate and filter the sound emanating from the larynx and to some degree can interact with the laryngeal airflow to strengthen it or weaken it as a sound source.

The vocal folds, in combination with the articulators, are capable of producing highly intricate arrays of sound. The tone of voice may be modulated to suggest emotions such as anger, surprise, or happiness. Singers use the human voice as an instrument for creating music.

How should I condition my voice for a stage play?
Q. I am a girl but my role in an english play would be a 50-60 year old man. My voice is kinda low and a bit nasal. What should I drink or eat to make my voice sound like a husky man's voice. I would also appreciate tips on how I can modulate my voice better.

A. try eating lots of ice or ketchup...it will spoil your voice for a day or two ;-) you can also get in touch with the kenneth schneider apogee artists program where you can get the opportunity of participating in apogee academy training programs and of performing in events around the world...it really fun :-)

If someone has a naturally good voice how much improvement would voice lessons actually offer?
Q. do voice lessons improve your voice even better, like 50% better if one has a pretty nice voice to begin with?

A. Yes, they most definitely do. Taking voice lessons helps teach you how to properly use your abs to support your voice, instead of your throat and jaw. I take voice lessons and tension in my throat and jaw is what I have the most trouble with. It also helps with intonation and to improve your range. I had a pretty good voice, but I started taking voice lessons this past summer, learned a few songs, and performed one at a studio class. My friend, who is a really good singer, told me that was the best she'd ever heard me sing. There was a noticable improvement in my voice, my intonation. I also learned that I was an alto, even though I had been singing first soprano in choir all year long. Voice lessons definitely help. If you want to… [cont.]

What actually happens when you lose your voice?
Q. I have just recently (this morning) lost my voice basically, I can manage some pretty awful sounds and I wasn't yelling or screaming. In fact, I have had a sore throat since yesterday and I was surprised to wake and find my voice in its present condition. I already know remedies for getting my voice back, but this has really captured my interest. I read that you can literally lose your voice, but how exactly does it happen?

A. You start to sound a little bit like Carol Channing - depending on the circumstances, it may or may not hurt to talk - i know this because I tend to lose my voice whenever I stay away from home, it's a climate thing. It's really just something settling in your throat - phlegm will eventually flush it out, but it'll accumulate in your throat first, trust me. I'd say go for very hot tea with honey or very cold water with ice, or a mixture of both throughout the day. Literally losing your voice is pretty scary - but it doesn't last forever. At the most, a day or two. If that happens, just relax your vocal chords for a while, they'll start to feel better. Don't try talking or strain yourself to make your voice heard.

A: It removes the characters from the story. Which pretty much wrecks the story. Sometimes that's your goal. Usually it isn't. For a fuller explanation, visit Plot to Punctuation. (Hat tip to Jane Friedman, via Mark Allen.)
