The human voice consists of sound made by a human being using the vocal folds for talking, singing, laughing, crying, screaming, etc. Human voice is specifically that part of human sound production in which the vocal folds (vocal cords) are the primary sound source. Generally speaking, the mechanism for generating the human voice can be subdivided into three parts; the lungs, the vocal folds within the larynx, and the articulators. The lung (the pump) must produce adequate airflow and air pressure to vibrate vocal folds (this air pressure is the fuel of the voice). The vocal folds (vocal cords) are a vibrating valve that chops up the airflow from the lungs into audible pulses that form the laryngeal sound source. The muscles of the larynx adjust the length and tension of the vocal folds to ‘fine tune’ pitch and tone. The articulators (the parts of the vocal tract above the larynx consisting of tongue, palate, cheek, lips, etc.) articulate and filter the sound emanating from the larynx and to some degree can interact with the laryngeal airflow to strengthen it or weaken it as a sound source.

The vocal folds, in combination with the articulators, are capable of producing highly intricate arrays of sound. The tone of voice may be modulated to suggest emotions such as anger, surprise, or happiness. Singers use the human voice as an instrument for creating music.

Vocal....???
Q. How do I know what voice type I have? I can sing loud and soft, and quite high if I need to, and can hold notes for 10-15 seconds depending on the note If it helps, I sing in Musicals, and I can sing Defying gravity, no good deed, part of your world and I have a dream, to name a few

A. Well, If you ask me, it depends on what your comfortable with and if you sound good doing it. You see, I'm a singer at my school, I love Rock and pop, but I noticed that I'm better with ballads or blues.(even thought I HATE blues). Right now, I am singing "Imagine" by john lennon(?) and that song is perfect for the type of voice I have. Just try different types of songs and see if your voice seems to be in harmony with the chosen types.

How can I expand my vocal range without damaging my voice?
Q. I would like to expand my vocal range but I heard that it is very easy to damage the vocal cords if you don't know what you're doing. So I am hesitant to sing high notes. Could someone give me tips on how to expand my vocal range without damaging my vocal cords?

A. Do not overthink about hurting your voice though. To get vocal nodules to a serious level, you need to REALLY do lots of damage! You need to use your voice alot! Not just like our normal speaking. You can damage your voice when singing throughout your range, not just your high notes. By the looks of past answers/questions, you seem to be a mezzo soprano. But again! Remember we can never be sure until we HEAR you... But if you have that range, I will give you some exercises. Remember, exercises are to get your bad habits out of the way, therefore, one must practice A LOT to apply the exercises' singing to our normal singing. One of my favorite exercises, is this one, it helps you increase your upper range. Make sure your throat is… [cont.]

How easy is it to damage your vocal chords?
Q. I've been singing in theater for about two years now. I just began vocal lessons several weeks ago.I didn't learn how to properly sing until i began singing lessons. Could i have damaged my vocal chords? How long does it take to damage your vocal chords by singing improperly? Weeks? Months? Years? I'm 14, could it just be puberty effecting my singing voice? I know I'm throwing a lot of questions to you, but I'm just really worried about my voice.

A. I think as long as you don't do scream-o music or try to sing with your throat too much, you should be okay. It took me 6 years of singing wrong before i got a coach that taught me to sing from the diaphram, and i still sound really good in comparison to when I was younger. my vocal cords aren't damaged, and we are about the same age, so i'm guessing just puberty.
