From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Humour or humor (see spelling differences) is the tendency of particular cognitive experiences to provoke laughter and provide amusement. The term derives from the humoral medicine of the ancient Greeks, which taught that the balance of fluids in the human body, known as humours (Latin: umor, "body fluid"), control human health and emotion. People of all ages and cultures respond to humour. The majority of people are able to experience humour, i.e., to be amused, to laugh or smile at something funny, and thus they are considered to have a sense of humour. The hypothetical person lacking a sense of humour would likely find the behaviour induced by humour to be inexplicable, strange, or even irrational. Though ultimately decided by personal taste, the extent to which an individual will find something humorous depends upon a host of variables, including geographical location, culture, maturity, level of education, intelligence and context. For example, young children may favour slapstick, such as Punch and Judy puppet shows or cartoons such as Tom and Jerry. Satire may rely more on understanding the target of the humour and thus tends to appeal to more mature audiences. Nonsatirical humour can be specifically termed "recreational drollery". Many theories exist about what humour is and what social function it serves. The prevailing types of theories attempting to account for the existence of humour include psychological theories, the vast majority of which consider humour-induced behaviour to be very healthy; spiritual theories, which may, for instance, consider humour to be a "gift from God"; and theories which consider humour to be an unexplainable mystery, very much like a mystical experience. Please help me! A big thanks to those who answer this! Asked by coolcolouredcat - Mon Apr 13 17:02:56 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Ever hear the saying,"laughter is the best medicine"? That's why humor is a very significant characteristic :) Spreading smiles to reduce tears, type of thing. When you have a sense of humor and can easily laugh, or make others laugh easily, it's very comforting for both parties. Laughing can be a release like crying - both are actually very theraputic. Hope this helps - Good luck :) Answered by I laugh, I smile; I take Prozac - Mon Apr 13 17:09:47 2009 Do you think a sense of humor is spiritually important, detrimental or neutral? Q. I was just told that the Bible contains to reference to humor because it is not a joke book. But it is, I thought, a book about spirituality - it talks about love, hate, good sex, bad sex, incest (good and bad apparently), sacrifice, torture, kindness, cruelty, idealism, etc. Why wouldn't it tell us what place humor has in our spiritual growth? Seriously. Asked by Howie Stun - Fri Nov 13 11:45:20 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. I don't know about spiritually important, but until you can see the humor in your own existence and experience, I don't think you can be emotionally healthy. -- Regards, John Popelish Answered by jpopelish - Fri Nov 13 11:55:53 2009 How important do you think it is for a president to have a good sense of humor?
Q. How important do you think it is for a president to have a good sense of humor? What sorts of humor do you think are most important for a president to have/appreciate - and how will it effect their ability to do their job? Asked by James - Fri Feb 1 23:33:52 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. I think the more humor a president has the better. Having a sense of humor is one of the best markers of a candidate being down to earth and understanding actual people.
